Referral traffic describes the people who come to your documents from other sites, such as LinkedIn, Instagram etc.

When someone clicks on a link from a social network, Google, email, or other website where the link to a document has been shared - they end up at a TRUE document - the tracking systems recognise the visitor as a referral. 

Referral traffic is the same as backlinks. When businesses have good backlinks, they generate a consistent source of traffic to their website. Since your TRUE documents can be shown on your own subdomain, every document is a potential source of traffic through shares and Google searches.
